Health Minister Allocates £500,000 to Voluntary Groups Aiding Waiting List Patients
Northern Ireland Health Minister Nesbitt announced funding of £500,000 to 20 voluntary and community sector organisations. The grants assist individuals on health and social care waiting lists.
Minister Nesbitt visited Mencap and the Waterside Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership in Derry slash Londonderry. He stated that the voluntary sector plays a key role in supporting health and wellbeing for people on waiting lists.
The Support While Waiting grant scheme targets patients in neurology, orthopaedics and musculoskeletal, gynaecology, and mental health services. It also covers children with disabilities and complex needs awaiting ASD slash ADHD assessments.
The funding will benefit 2,400 patients and their families. Services include optimising physical health to prevent deterioration, emotional wellbeing support, and preparation for future treatment.
Claire Shepherd, Head of Children and Families at Mencap, noted increased anxiety and stress among parents and carers of children with learning disabilities due to waiting lists. She said the funding enables community activities to ease family pressures.
