Orange Lodge in Tyrone Denies Fake Mortgage Aid Claims
A WhatsApp message circulating in the Castlecaulfield area of County Tyrone claims the local Orange Lodge can assist with mortgage costs to encourage people to buy homes there and support the Protestant community.
The message urges friends, families and those connected to Castlecaulfield to purchase property locally. It states that low primary school numbers make it vital to strengthen the community. It adds that contacts with financial advisors may provide mortgage support from the Orange Lodge and lists individuals to contact.
A spokesperson for the Castlecaulfield Orange Lodge stated the message is fake.
DUP councillor Mark Robinson said the message matches one shared previously in the area. He believes it aims to increase tensions before local parades. Robinson added that Orange Order membership would rise sharply if the group offered mortgage assistance. He remarked that upon seeing it he checked his calendar thinking it might be April Fool's Day.
