Developers Appeal Council Refusal of Housing at Tullynagardy Wood
Developers intend to appeal a planning refusal for luxury homes at Tullynagardy Wood outside Newtownards. Ards and North Down Council denied permission for the site. The Planning Appeals Commission will hear the case on Wednesday, April 29.
Council members rejected officer recommendations and blocked the proposal. They cited the site's status as historic native woodland that supports native flora, fauna and the endangered red squirrel.
Alliance MLA Nick Mathison backs local residents opposing the development. He maintains the entire site functions as a woodland ecosystem unfit for building. Mathison expressed hope that the commission upholds the council's refusal.
Alliance Newtownards councillor and Deputy Mayor Vicky Moore also supports the objectors. She noted the nearby community's firm resistance since the plans emerged. Moore stated that she expects the commission to protect the woodland.
