Strabane Fuel Protesters Plan Weekly Demonstrations Against High Costs
Protest organiser Paddy McLaughlin plans weekly demonstrations in Strabane until further notice. The events aim to press the government to cap diesel, petrol and kerosene prices. McLaughlin also seeks suspension of carbon tax, excise duty and VAT.
Around 40 tractors, lorries and cars gathered at the Dublin Road industrial estate on Saturday. McLaughlin noted a smaller turnout than expected. He attributed this to police legal actions against participants in other illegal protests.
The protest received police permission for its route. McLaughlin owns a limousine and vehicle recovery company. He stated police support the event if it stays peaceful.
McLaughlin called for government action on the cost-of-living crisis. He seeks support for farmers, haulers and contractors affected by fuel prices. The protests invite contractors, farmers and haulage drivers to participate.
McLaughlin emphasised that the events carry no risk of legal action or licence loss if they remain peaceful.
