Augher Siblings Release Debut Album Honoring Granduncles
Seven siblings from Augher in Tyrone have released their first album. The McKenna Family consists of Eugene, Daniel, James, Sinéad, Peter, Ciarán and Catríona. The album 'The Boys of Carrickroe' pays tribute to their late granduncles Pete and Pat McKenna, fiddlers from Carrickroe in Monaghan.
The family launched the album on Saturday night at Dún Uladh Heritage Centre. They represent the fourth generation of McKenna family musicians. The collection includes tunes and songs from old cassette and radio recordings, along with pieces learned by the siblings.
Instruments featured include fiddle, pipes, harp, box and concertina. The album contains reimagined traditional songs from the local area. The siblings perform as solo musicians and as a family band in Ireland, Japan, the UK, USA and Europe.
They have appeared on RTÉ’s ‘Late Late Show’ St Patrick’s Day Special, ‘Geantraí’ on TG4, ‘Fleadh Live’ on TG4 during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and ‘Céilí House’. Performances have taken place at the United Nations HQ and New York Irish Centre. They also featured on NBC St. Patrick’s Day coverage.
