Alliance Economy spokesperson Kate Nicholl MLA spoke ahead of an Assembly motion on 24 March. The South Belfast MLA highlighted Northern Ireland's dependence on fossil fuels. She called for increased investment in renewable energy to secure energy supplies and reduce costs for households.

Nicholl noted that global events like the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Gulf show risks from fossil fuel reliance. These affect the environment, security, and energy prices. She questioned why parties including the DUP, UUP, and TUV seek to reduce renewable targets and slow progress.

Investment in local renewable infrastructure would produce greener energy under domestic control. This would lower bills for consumers and businesses while attracting economic investment. Nicholl urged the Economy Minister to create a plan ending dependence on fossil fuels and advancing a green energy transition.
