Sinn Féin MLA Calls for UK Tax Cuts to Ease Energy Cost Pressures
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney called on the British government to introduce tax reductions on petrol, diesel, and home heating oil. He made the remarks during an Assembly debate on transitioning to green energy.
Kearney represents South Antrim. He stated that rising fuel and energy costs are placing pressure on working families and worsening the cost of living crisis.
He attributed the increases to a global energy shock stemming from the US-Israeli war against Iran. Kearney argued that this conflict should not serve as grounds for higher prices on consumers.
The MLA proposed a windfall tax on oil and gas producers alongside the tax cuts. He said the British government possesses the means to assist communities and that inaction amounts to a political decision.
Kearney added that work on shifting to renewable energy sources needs to speed up.
