23 Northern Ireland Firms Penalised for Minimum Wage Violations
The UK Government has identified 23 companies in Northern Ireland for failing to pay the minimum wage to their employees. A total of 2240 workers received back pay amounting to £157,695.53.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle stated that most businesses pay staff correctly and follow rules. He added that employers should not gain advantage by withholding owed wages. Kyle mentioned plans to collaborate with the new Fair Work Agency to enforce compliance.
Employment Rights Minister Kate Dearden said no worker should receive less than earned after a week's work. She urged employers to review payrolls to avoid penalties.
This action forms part of a wider UK enforcement effort against 389 employers, with penalties totalling £12.6 million added to repaid wages.
The list appears as the first publication since a budget pledge for more frequent disclosures. It precedes the Fair Work Agency's start on 7 April under the Employment Rights Act.
The agency will centralise enforcement of workers' rights, including minimum wage, holiday pay, and sick pay.
