The National Living Wage rose to £12.71 per hour on 1 April 2026. This change applies across the UK, including Northern Ireland. The Low Pay Commission recommended the new rates last autumn.

Baroness Philippa Stroud, Chair of the Low Pay Commission, stated the recommendations balance economic and labour market protection with a real-terms increase for low earners.

Rates for workers aged 18-20 increased to £10.85 per hour. Those under 18 and apprentices receive £8.00 per hour. The Low Pay Commission sets these levels through evidence-based advice to the government.

The commission published a report on 1 April 2026 assessing impacts on businesses and employees. It launched a consultation for feedback from employers and workers to inform 2027 recommendations.

Baroness Stroud noted economic changes since last autumn require gathering fresh evidence for later recommendations.
