An investigation is underway after a yearling horse was euthanised and an adult horse found dead in a field on Cookstown Road in Dungannon.

The incident came to light on Wednesday evening, March 11, when a member of the public posted an image on social media showing the young horse in distress, lying on its side.

Local residents responded to the call for help, gathering at the site to provide blankets for the animal and summoning a veterinarian.

The vet assessed the yearling, which was experiencing seizures, and determined it had to be put down.

My Lovely Horse Rescue reported that police discovered the adult horse, believed to be the yearling's mother, dead nearby.

The charity described the field conditions as swampy mud, noting both animals had likely struggled for days.

Mid Ulster Council confirmed its Animal Welfare team received a report on one horse dying in Dungannon and opened an active investigation.

The USPCA has been contacted regarding the case.
