John Thomson, aged 43, from Belmont Hall Drive in Antrim town, faces a 13-month driving ban after police stopped his vehicle around 9.30pm on February 7.

Officers observed the car swerving and crossing central white lines multiple times. A breath test showed an alcohol reading of 88, exceeding the legal limit of 35.

Antrim Magistrates' Court in Ballymena heard Thomson had no prior record. The court learned he had hosted a housewarming at his new home that day.

Thomson works as a chef. He borrowed catering equipment for the event and drove it to St Joseph's Church afterward.

The defence stated he consumed whiskey at the event, an infrequent occurrence for him. He believed he was fit to drive despite uncertainty over drink measures.

Magistrates imposed a £250 fine alongside the driving disqualification.
