Economy Minister Increases Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loans by 54%
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald announced an increase in postgraduate tuition fee loans for students in Northern Ireland. The maximum loan will rise from £6,500 to £10,000 starting in the 2026/27 academic year.
The change represents a 54% increase. Dr Archibald stated her department faces financial pressures but aims to maintain affordable education. She noted undergraduate fees remain at half the level in Britain and maintenance loans rose by 20% previously.
Dr Archibald said the move will allow more students to pursue postgraduate study and develop skills needed for economic growth and productivity.
Ben Friel, President of NUS-USI, welcomed the announcement. He said it provides relief to students facing costs after undergraduate study and pursuing careers needing postgraduate qualifications.
Friel added that finance must not block ambitious students from higher education. He stressed support for living costs during study and looked forward to the Higher Education Funding Review.
The decision follows a public consultation.
