A councillor in Lisburn raised concerns at a Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council communities committee meeting this week about flooding affecting elderly residents' homes. DUP councillor Jonathan Craig pointed to surface water from council-maintained lands, including Aberdelgy Golf Club in Lambeg and a green area at Beach Park off Kennedy Drive, as the cause during recent storms.

Craig noted he visited the affected homes and observed only sandbags in place. He stated the council maintains the grounds responsible for the flooding. The councillor expressed frustration that residents must rely on short-term measures like sandbags despite the council's role.

A council officer informed the committee that meetings with various departments will address short-term and long-term solutions. The officer added that some affected areas belong to the council while others do not, and details will be provided to Craig.

Outside the meeting, Craig highlighted that one elderly resident claimed on their home insurance for repairs due to water from council lands after heavy rain. He called for a drainage solution to be implemented ahead of further storms.
