Alliance MLA Kate Nicholl has called for stronger artificial intelligence regulations. This follows reports that Meta is examining accounts on Facebook and Instagram for sharing AI-generated material degrading and sexualising people with disabilities.

Nicholl, who represents South Belfast, described such content on social media as unacceptable. She highlighted risks from AI tools that simplify production of abusive material. Platforms, she said, fail to adequately remove violations including ableism and misogyny.

The MLA plans an amendment to the Justice Bill. It would prohibit creation and possession of applications designed for non-consensual sexually explicit images. Nicholl aims to consult organisations to strengthen the measure.

Northern Ireland's Justice Bill addresses various legal updates at Stormont. Alliance supports centrist policies on technology and rights protections. Debates on AI guardrails align with UK-wide efforts to curb online harms.
