Alliance MLA Kate Nicholl for South Belfast intends to table an amendment to the Justice Bill. The proposal targets the creation and possession of applications and tools made to generate non-consensual sexually explicit images.

Meta has begun investigations into accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Those accounts distributed AI-generated material that degrades and sexualises individuals with disabilities.

Nicholl called the reports a prompt for regulators to address dangers from generative AI. She pointed to shortcomings by social media platforms in upholding rules against abusive material involving ableism and misogyny.

The MLA invited organisations and interested parties to provide input during development of the amendment. Northern Ireland's Justice Bill forms part of the Stormont assembly's current legislative priorities on criminal justice matters.
