Former Omagh councillor Charlie McElholm remembered for community work
Former Omagh district councillor Charlie McElholm has died. He was remembered for his work for local people and his involvement in community life in Dromore and Drumquin.
Mr McElholm was elected to Omagh District Council as an Irish Independence Party representative in May 1981, shortly after the death of Bobby Sands. He lived in Dromore throughout his life but was proud of his Drumquin roots.
For many years, he was a key member of the organising committee for the Hills Above Drumquin Festival. He was also a longstanding member of Dromore CCÉ and took an active part in community events in both areas.
Cllr Stephen McCann, vice-chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, paid tribute. He recalled Mr McElholm's commitment to public service during a difficult period. He said Mr McElholm worked tirelessly for the people of the area at a tumultuous period in history. He was a strong advocate for human and civil rights and was a spokesperson for local residents during a period of controversial parades in Dromore.
Cllr McCann described Mr McElholm as a life-long Irish Republican who was part of a strong Irish Independence Party team in Omagh at that time. He said Mr McElholm loved all things Irish, including music, language, and sport.
Mr McElholm was predeceased by his wife Margaret, a member of the Nugent family from Ederney. He is survived by Cathaoir, Siobhan, Treasa and wider family.
