Strabane received a visit this week from Sir Phil Redmond, chair of the UK Town of Culture Expert Advisory Panel, as the town advances its bid to be named the first UK Town of Culture in 2028. The final bid is due for submission in November.

Strabane is the only town in Northern Ireland shortlisted among 15 towns for the title. The competition will select three finalists in January, followed by visits from the full judging panel, with the winner announced in March 2027. The winning town will receive £3 million, while two runners-up will each receive £250,000.

Sir Phil Redmond is a playwright and screenwriter known for television dramas including Grange Hill, Brookside and Hollyoaks. He initiated the UK City of Culture competition and has chaired its independent advisory panel since it began.

During his visit, Redmond met with a range of people involved in community development, arts, culture, heritage, education, youth engagement, business, music and the creative industries. He also met the Mayor and Council representatives.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, said the visit was an opportunity to showcase Strabane and introduce Redmond to the people supporting the bid. She said there was a sense of pride and ambition around the campaign, and the council is determined to put forward a strong case.

Redmond thanked everyone involved and said the level of enthusiasm, energy, creativity and ambition across all ages was infectious. He said he looked forward to receiving the full bid.

The council continues to encourage residents, artists and businesses to support the campaign. Anyone wishing to share ideas or offer support can email the local team. More information is available on the Strabane Town of Culture website and social media pages.
