Portadown man jailed for six months after disorder on Garvaghy Road
A 28-year-old Portadown man has been jailed for six months after admitting to disorderly behaviour and attempting to damage a police vehicle during an incident on Garvaghy Road last September.
Malachy McCann, of Churchill Park, Portadown, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court via video link from prison and pleaded guilty to using disorderly behaviour on September 27 and attempting to cause criminal damage to a police Land Rover.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan imposed a three-month sentence for the Garvaghy Road incident and activated a previously suspended three-month sentence, ordering the two to run consecutively.
Prosecutors said that at around 4:30pm on the Sunday in question, police footage showed McCann emerging to the front of a crowd and throwing a bottle at a police Land Rover. He was seen waving his arms and shouting at police before being pulled back by others in the crowd.
McCann left the scene but was tracked to his home by a PSNI helicopter.
Defence counsel Joel Lindsay told the court that McCann was remorseful and had told police he did not care about the march, adding that his problem was that the incident had stopped him from getting to an off-licence for more alcohol.
In sentencing, Judge Ranaghan said the court was not overly concerned with political matters but was concerned about McCann's attitude to police.
