Portadown bakery fined £1,150 for food hygiene breaches
A Portadown bakery business has been fined £1,150 after pleading guilty to four food safety charges at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court.
The Cookery Nook Bakery, located at Mahon Industrial Estate, was prosecuted by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
The court heard that in February 2026, Environmental Health Officers found the business had failed to keep premises clean, failed to maintain good hygiene practices including pest control, failed to implement HACCP procedures, and failed to ensure food handlers were supervised and trained.
In addition to the fines, the business owner was ordered to pay £100 in council legal fees and a £69 court summons fee.
A council spokesperson said officers carry out regular inspections of food businesses to protect consumers and that the case shows the serious consequences for businesses that do not comply with food hygiene regulations. The spokesperson added that the council aims to work with businesses by providing guidance and support, but will take action including prosecution when failings are found.
The council’s Environmental Health Department Food Team investigates complaints, carries out inspections, awards food hygiene ratings, samples and tests foods, and provides advice to businesses.
All food businesses must be registered with the Environmental Health Department. Consumers can check food hygiene ratings at www.food.gov.uk.
