The First Minister and deputy First Minister have appointed Rachel Langdale KC as Chair of the Truth Recovery Public Inquiry. The Inquiry will examine Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 1995.

Alliance Party Executive Office spokesperson Paula Bradshaw welcomed the appointment. She said the appointment would be welcomed by victims and survivors who have worked to pursue the Inquiry. Bradshaw stated that the appointment meant the Inquiry would be chaired by someone with appropriate sensitivity and experience.

Bradshaw, the South Belfast MLA, said it was important that the Inquiry commence and proceed without further delay. She said victims and survivors had already experienced too many delays.

Bradshaw described the appointment of a Chair Designate under robust legislation as a significant step forward and to be warmly welcomed.

The Executive Office said Rachel Langdale KC is a barrister with extensive experience in public inquiries and complex investigations. It said the appointment reflected the Executive’s commitment to ensuring the inquiry is independent and survivor focused.
