A new book examining the practical implications of a potential united Ireland will be launched at Holywell Trust in Derry on October 7 at 7pm. 'Before the Vote: Planning for a United Ireland' by Professor John Doyle does not take a position on Irish unity, but argues that advance planning and evidence-based discussion are essential ahead of any future referendum.

Drawing on new research, the book compares economic conditions and public policy in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It includes the first detailed comparison of the two health systems, covering outcomes, waiting lists and staffing numbers, and reviews existing research on differences in economic growth since the Good Friday Agreement.

Professor Doyle said that the timing of any vote is very uncertain and not in the control of an Irish Government, so it is unreasonable to wait for a majority for unity to emerge inside Northern Ireland without setting out in detail what a united Ireland would look like in areas such as the economy, health, pensions, welfare, education, equality and minority rights. His book addresses these areas directly with a focus on evidence rather than any preferred outcome.
