A two-year-old whippet was rescued by Dogs Trust staff after running in front of their van near Clady. Transfer coordinators Janine Brownlees and Caitlin McIlwee brought the dog, named Little Gem, to the charity's Ballymena rehoming centre. Local dog wardens allowed her to remain in the charity's care, and staff discovered she was pregnant. That same night, she gave birth to three puppies.

The puppies, named Chickpea, Crouton and Feta, were cared for in the puppy unit at Dogs Trust Ballymena until they were old enough to be adopted. All three have now found new families. Little Gem remains available for adoption.

Sarah Park, manager at Dogs Trust Ballymena, described the rescue as being in the right place at the right time, adding that Little Gem's birth that evening seemed meant to be. She said the dog is resilient, trusting and sweet-natured despite her experiences. Park noted Little Gem can be shy when meeting new people but becomes a close companion once she knows her family. She is affectionate and enjoys fuss and attention. The charity wants her to go to a home where she is the only dog. Little Gem is food-motivated and intelligent, which Park said would make further training enjoyable.

Dogs Trust is seeking an adult-only home for Little Gem, with adopters who are active. She would benefit from a secure garden where she can run and play, along with enrichment activities to keep her busy. Details on adopting Little Gem and other dogs are available at dogstrust.org.uk/ballymena.
