A man accused of a knife attack in north Belfast has had his case sent to the crown court.

Hadi Alodid, 31, of Duncairn Avenue, appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court by video-link from Maghaberry Prison on Wednesday. He is charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie on June 8.

The court previously heard that Ogilvie lost his left eye and received deep cuts to his head, face and back. Alodid is also charged with threatening to kill an NHS radiographer and possession of a knife.

During the brief preliminary inquiry hearing, the charges were put to Alodid. When asked if he wanted to say anything in response, he replied "no". The judge said there was a prima facie case to answer and sent the case to the crown court, with a date to be fixed.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has previously said Alodid may originally be from Chad. The incident in north Belfast was followed by serious disorder in several areas across Northern Ireland that police described as racially motivated.

During the disorder, masked groups set fire to homes, cars and a bus, and targeted people based on their race. Foreign national healthcare workers were subjected to threats and intimidation.
