The UK government plans to publish proposed amendments to the Troubles legacy bill in the middle of next month, according to Sinn Féin MP John Finucane.

Finucane spoke on Thursday after meeting Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant, who held a series of meetings with the largest Stormont parties throughout the day.

The amendments are part of Labour's bill to replace the 2023 Legacy Act, which introduced a ban on inquests and civil actions related to Troubles-era incidents.

The new plan involves a Legacy Commission to investigate Troubles-related killings, a separate information recovery body, and a dedicated legacy unit within An Garda Síochána.

A package of protections for military veterans has also been proposed by the government.

Finucane said the meeting provided a flavour of the package but not detailed text. He said it would be prudent to give full judgment only after the detail is made public.

The bill follows agreement on a joint framework with the Irish government and has faced criticism for delays.

Sinn Féin has stated that the final legislation must command the confidence of all families and that there should be no special protections or exemptions.
