Derry MLA’s homelessness bill consultation closes Thursday
The consultation on a bill that would extend the Housing Executive’s obligation to support people facing homelessness closes on Thursday, September 3.
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Ciara Ferguson, who chairs the Communities Committee, is bringing forward the legislation. It would require the Housing Executive to assist those at risk of homelessness for up to 60 days to find accommodation, an increase from the current 28-day duty.
Ferguson said the proposal has received widespread backing. She stated that the change would give people a better chance to secure suitable housing and avoid the loss of stability that comes with homelessness.
She added that Sinn Féin is committed to tackling homelessness and providing the strongest possible support.
