Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has begun installing colour-coded signs at parks, open spaces and other council-managed sites to indicate dog control rules.

Depending on the location, the signs show whether dogs are permitted off-lead, must be kept on a lead, are prohibited, or are subject to other specific requirements.

The rollout is taking place in phases, with priority areas being addressed first. The council has advised dog owners not to rely solely on the new signage during installation and to check the rules for an area before entering it.

While the signs are being put up, maps of designated areas and their restrictions are available on the council’s website.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Henry Cushinan, said the signage will act as a key guideline for all dog owners and help ensure the borough can be enjoyed by residents and visitors. He urged owners to familiarise themselves with the new signs and follow them with due care.

The Dog Control Orders are intended to support responsible dog ownership and allow council spaces to be used safely by everyone.

Anyone found in breach of the orders can face a penalty of up to £1,000.
