A Ballyclare woman has been disqualified from driving for 16 months after a drink-driving collision in Moira.

Catherine Anderson, 65, whose address was given as Main Street, Ballyclare, appeared before Lisburn Magistrates Court in connection with the incident on 22 July 2026.

Police attended a report of a two-vehicle collision on the Lisburn Road at 7.21pm. Officers noted minor damage to the rear of one vehicle. The driver of that vehicle told police they believed the other motorist was intoxicated.

A roadside breath test on Anderson recorded 93 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms. She was taken to Musgrave Custody Suite, where an evidential sample gave a reading of 94 micrograms.

A defence lawyer told the court that Anderson had lost her husband in May and her mother the following November, and that she had been undergoing chemotherapy. The offence occurred at a low point in her life, when she was going to see her sister, and she was mortified by her actions.

District Judge Rosie Watters said she was concerned that the defendant might have a drinking problem and wanted to ensure she received help if needed. The judge disqualified Anderson from driving for 16 months, fined her £250, and imposed a £15 offender levy. She told the defendant she hoped things would improve for her.
