County Down dancers win gold at Global Dance Open Finals in Spain
Two dancers from County Down have won gold at the Global Dance Open Finals in Spain, representing Northern Ireland. Niamh Scates and Allie Thompson, from Lisbane and Newtownards, won the gold in the lyrical dance category, a style that blends ballet with jazz and modern dance influences.
Vikki Scates, Niamh's mother, said the pair have been dance partners since they were both three years old and have danced together for 15 years. She added that this year's event was their final competition together.
The pair have competed in Northern Ireland every year and have travelled internationally for 10 of those years. They previously took part in the Dance World Cup in Prague and the Global Dance Open Finals in Birmingham last year.
Participating in the finals in Spain required passing several qualifying competitions to earn a place, according to Vikki Scates. The pair won gold in their very final dance at the competition.
Both dancers are now preparing to study at separate dance institutions in London. Niamh Scates will attend London Studio Centre in north London, and Allie Thompson will attend Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom.
They have trained at Ards Dance Centre for years. Their studies may lead to careers including West End productions and touring with ballet companies.
