Irish sailors Ger Owens and Mel Morris won the GP14 World Championship on Belfast Lough, completing an all-Irish top two.

Owens, from Wicklow Sailing Club, and Morris, from Antrim Sailing Club, finished the eight-race series ahead of Sam Street and Josh Lloyd of Blessington Sailing Club in second place. Oli Hale and Harry Shaw of Great Britain took third.

The event was hosted by Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and drew 90 boats from Ireland, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and France.

The final day of racing was affected by light and shifting winds. Race officer Ruan O’Tiárnaigh postponed the start, and the first race attempt was abandoned when the breeze dropped. Once the wind returned, a shortened final race was completed.

A Silver Fleet crew won that last race, while Owens and Morris secured the overall championship.

Race director Gerry Reid said the week tested competitors with a range of conditions and thanked the race management team and volunteers.

Commodore Lindsay Nolan thanked sponsors including HD Sails and Ards and North Down Borough Council, and congratulated the new world champions.

Competitor Adeel Khan, sailing for Pakistan, said racing was close throughout the fleet and that the race officer managed to complete the final race despite difficult conditions.
