A former unused green area at Carlton Drive in Strabane has been converted into a community growing space that is already attracting strong interest from local residents.

Within two months of receiving the keys, the Neighbours United group has 16 growers tending raised beds and cultivating strawberries and tomatoes in a polytunnel. Demand has been high enough that members are considering adding more growing beds.

The £38,000 project was delivered by the Housing Executive’s North Region Grounds Maintenance Department. The site now includes a polytunnel, garden shed, summer house, seating area, raised planters, and newly planted trees and shrubs intended to support local biodiversity.

Neighbours United member Majella Reed said the group immediately began working together and sharing everything, with people of all ages getting involved. A three-year-old participant is growing pumpkins ahead of Halloween. Reed said children are proud of their efforts, carrying their pots and watering their plants.

The group also used a Community Involvement Grant to purchase equipment such as potting tables, polytunnel shelving, a lawnmower, and child-friendly watering cans, aiming to make the space accessible regardless of age or experience.

Nuala Kildunne, Supporting Communities’ Community Development Officer for the area, said the growing space would give residents a chance to connect with nature, build relationships, and feel more connected to their local community.

Neighbours United was established in 2022 after local residents identified a need for activities close to home. The group initially ran a Christmas grotto before developing a wider programme including a summer scheme. Supporting Communities training officer Karla Turner helped the group begin with community development training, and Kildunne has continued to provide support as the group takes on new projects.

The growing space is located directly across from the Neighbours United Hub. Reed said residents now feel a sense of pride in having a welcoming shared space where they can sit outside, enjoy the fresh air, and contribute to protecting wildlife and the environment.
