The first robotic surgical procedures have been completed at Altnagelvin Hospital’s day case unit in Derry. The Western Trust, which introduced the £2.4m machine earlier this year, confirmed that hernia operations were performed by a colorectal consultant.

Dr John Canny carried out the surgeries using the robot. He explained that the system offers three-dimensional vision inside the patient, which enhances precision and control. The surgeon operates four robotic arms from a console, providing a level of accuracy that exceeds traditional open or keyhole techniques.

The equipment includes a dual console set-up, which Dr Canny noted will allow him to train junior surgeons in robotic surgery. The Western Trust stated that it expects the technology to lead to fewer complications and better patient outcomes.
