Altnagelvin Hospital Introduces Surgical Robot for Multiple Specialties
Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry has introduced a new surgical robot in Theatre 9. The £2.4 million investment by the Western Trust supports procedures in colorectal surgery, upper GI surgery, gynaecological surgery and urology.
Western Trust Consultant Surgeon Ahmed Marzouk stated the robot allows surgeons greater control and accuracy. He said it reduces risks of complications for patients.
The device uses robotic arms operated by a surgeon at a console for minimally invasive operations. Marzouk noted it enhances surgeons' capabilities across multiple specialties.
Mark Gillespie, Director of Surgery, Paediatrics and Women’s Health at the Western Trust, said the technology brings reduced complications and better patient outcomes. He expects it to improve surgical efficiency and bed utilisation.
Gillespie added that the robot supports elective recovery and long-term service resilience. He said the investment aids professional development for the surgical team.
