The Police Service of Northern Ireland is investigating a reported assault on a child in the Canal Basin area of Strabane on Friday 17 July. A suspect has been identified and is assisting officers with their enquiries, the PSNI said. No further details were released as the investigation continues.

Local politicians expressed shock at the incident. Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Boggs praised the community response, saying residents had rallied to support the victim. Independent Councillor Raymond Barr called the attack senseless, horrific and disturbing.

West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan stated he was deeply shocked and condemned the assault as utterly disgraceful. He extended his thoughts to the child and her family, and thanked those who stepped forward to help in the immediate aftermath. Mr McCrossan added that every young person deserves to feel safe in their own community.
