Belleek man pleads guilty over fatal hit-and-run crash that killed motorcyclist
A County Fermanagh man has admitted causing the death of a motorcyclist by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene more than six years ago.
Connor McHugh (36), of Broolagh Road, Belleek, pleaded guilty at Dungannon Crown Court to all charges, including failing to remain after the collision and failing to report it to police.
The crash happened on 31 May 2020 on the Meenagh Road, Ederney. Willis Vogel, a 21-year-old from Limavady, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle when he was struck by a black jeep. He sustained very serious injuries and died at the scene.
The jeep did not stop. It was later recovered by gardaí in County Donegal and handed over to the PSNI. McHugh was arrested shortly after the incident and released on bail while inquiries continued.
The case took four years to reach court. With family of the victim present, McHugh entered his guilty pleas on Friday.
Defence counsel told the court that McHugh wished to offer condolences and expressed regret for his actions. A family member of Mr Vogel addressed the court, rejecting the apology as totally unacceptable.
Judge Brian Sherrard said the matter would be addressed at sentencing and ordered pre-sentence reports. He remarked that a custodial sentence was inevitable but granted continuing bail, noting there had been no breaches. McHugh is due to be sentenced on 3 September.
