Council swimming programme reaches 330 primary pupils across Antrim and Newtownabbey
The swimming programme, which began in April, is delivered by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. It has served around 330 pupils from 11 schools across the borough. Lessons are held at three council-owned leisure centres: Antrim Forum, Sixmile Leisure Centre, and Valley Leisure Centre.
Mayor Henry Cushinan visited Antrim Forum to observe the sessions and praise the initiative. He stated that the council was pleased to provide swimming lessons, calling them a vital life skill for children. He noted that the programme is funded through PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, and said it demonstrated how targeted local investment benefits young people.
In addition to the school programme, the council is offering summer swimming courses for children aged five and above at Antrim Forum and Sixmile Leisure Centre. These are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve technique and water confidence. Details are available on the council website.
