Poultry litter movement suspension between North and South lifted
The temporary suspension on new applications for moving poultry litter from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland has been lifted, removing a source of uncertainty for the agricultural sector.
Sinn Féin MLA and agriculture spokesperson Declan McAleer confirmed that the administrative hold had been resolved. He noted that the pause created concern among poultry producers who rely on cross-border movements as part of routine business.
Figures show that 29 licences for such transfers were issued in 2025 and a further nine had already been approved in 2026 before the hold. The quick resumption of the application process was welcomed as essential for the sector.
McAleer highlighted that he and party colleague Martin Kenny TD had been in contact with the respective agriculture ministers in Stormont and the Dáil to ensure the matter was addressed promptly. He said continued all-island cooperation would help avoid similar disruptions in the future.
