Doug Beattie has admitted he was not truthful in a social media video posted during a canvass in Banbridge.

The video showed him claiming to be canvassing with Alderman Ian Burns and Alderman Glenn Barr in the Summerhill area.

Beattie told BBC's Nolan Show that the two councillors were not present and that he had been "economical with the truth".

He said he was holding leaflets for the two Ulster Unionist Party members and was promoting their candidacies because they could not be there themselves.

Beattie said he was not dishonest in a way intended to damage anyone and that he would not apologise to the party for trying to promote it.

He also said the video's circulation indicated someone was deliberately trying to undermine him.

Beattie resigned as UUP leader at the weekend after accusing Jon Burrows of allowing a toxic atmosphere in the party.
