Mayor McHugh opened a new £3 million sports facility at Mitchell Park in Castlederg.

The project includes a 3G pitch for competitive soccer, a junior GAA pitch, and smaller soccer pitches for youth and recreational use.

Additional works completed under phase 2 of the Derg Active project include a coach education room, extra parking, a greenway, and an outdoor trim trail.

The site was previously a farm owned by Alex Mitchell, who allowed local children to play soccer there.

Carol Mitchell, daughter of the former owner, joined the Mayor to unveil a commemorative plaque.

Local elected representatives, sports clubs, and schools also attended the opening.

Mayor McHugh stated that the facility will provide a state-of-the-art venue for field sports and improve access to physical activity for residents in the Derg Ward.

The project received funding from the UK Government.
