A rugby match between the NI Blackthorns and the Irish Guards took place at Regent House Grammar School in Newtownards.

The fixture marked the school's centenary and honoured Lt Col Robert 'Paddy' Blair Mayne, a former pupil.

The NI Blackthorns team consists of tri-service regular and reserve personnel from across Northern Ireland and was formed in 2023.

Flt Lt Jamie Wilson said the match was the first between two teams under Army rugby union rules and included personnel from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force.

The hosts led 12-0 at half time before the Irish Guards won 22-19.

The event included an artillery display by 206 Ulster Battery Royal Artillery and performances by 502 Squadron's pipes and drums.

Representatives from RAF Cadets, 38 Squadron, the Infantry and the RAF Benevolent Fund attended and provided information on military opportunities in Northern Ireland.
