Spirit Dancer, a thoroughbred previously owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, has been retired to stables in Rathmullan, County Donegal.

The horse sustained a career-ending fetlock injury last year. Trainer Rachel Carton confirmed the joint could not withstand further racing after rest and rehabilitation.

Jockey Oisín Orr, Carton's stepson, arranged the relocation. Orr had ridden Spirit Dancer to victories including back-to-back wins in the Bahrain International Trophy in 2023 and 2024.

The horse now receives daily walks on local beaches. Carton also provides a small amount of locally-brewed beer with his evening feed.

Spirit Dancer is the offspring of champion sire Frankel. Carton described the horse as easy-going once settled, though occasionally restless in the stable.

Sir Alex Ferguson bred the horse and followed its career. Videos of its new routine have been shared with former trainer Richard Fahey and Ferguson.

Orr credited Spirit Dancer with opportunities to compete internationally during his riding career.
