A Derry man has been sentenced to 18 months probation after admitting a sexual assault on a woman in November.

Ryan Welch, 51, of Woodleigh Terrace, pleaded guilty to the offence that took place on 10 November.

Police responded to a report of a sexual assault in Woodleigh Terrace. They found the victim visibly upset on one side of the street and the defendant on the other.

The court heard that the woman had met Welch in a bar, had drinks with him, and then went to his home. She said she leaned over to pat his dog when Welch placed his hand between her legs.

Defence counsel said Welch had entered an early guilty plea and expressed remorse. Drink was cited as a factor in the incident.

Welch was placed on the Sex Offenders Register following sentencing.
