A new facility for Canal Boxing Academy opened at Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields on 18 May.

The Mayor, Alderman Amanda Grehan, performed the opening.

The building provides two full-size boxing rings, a gym, changing rooms, showers, toilets and storage.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and the PEACEPLUS programme funded the project.

Canal Boxing Academy had occupied its previous premises for 17 years.

The new space will allow the club to expand membership and add changing facilities for women and girls.

Councillor Tim Mitchell said the facility will accommodate more clubs, groups and individuals.

Councillor Uel Mackin said schools, community groups, sports clubs and residents will benefit from the wider range of activities.

Jim Russell, Club Secretary, said the old premises were beyond repair and the new facility is state of the art.
