Raymond McCartney to Discuss Troubles Involvement at Derry Event
Raymond McCartney will speak at an event in Derry's Gasyard next Tuesday at 2pm. The talk forms part of the Did Ye Hear About? series. Pat McArt will interview him.
McCartney participated in a hunger strike in the 1980s and went 53 days without food. He served as a Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle from 2004 to 2020. He was released from Long Kesh in 1994.
In 1979, courts convicted McCartney of murder and related offences linked to IRA activity. He served 15 years in prison. Authorities quashed those convictions in 2007.
Event organiser Chris McDonagh described the series as ground-breaking. He noted speakers from the Orange Order, Bands Forum, Dublin government and Muslim community have taken part. McDonagh called the talks a learning experience for attendees.
McDonagh invited the public to attend and urged local secondary schools to send GCSE and A Level Politics students.
