Rostrevor Teen Joins Family Folk Group for Denmark Tour
Ava Turnbull, a 15-year-old musician from Rostrevor, has joined the folk group Na Leanaí for a tour in Denmark. She plays fiddle, guitar and sings.
Turnbull attends Our Lady’s Grammar School and studies music at Flynn Performing Arts. Her teacher there is Fiona Flynn.
Na Leanaí includes Turnbull's mother Sorcha on flute, whistles, bodhran and vocals. Fra Sands plays guitars and vocals. Annie Hassan plays fiddle and vocals.
The group formed with members from the Sands family. They have toured Europe for more than ten years.
Turnbull's grandmother Anne Sands performed at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1970 with her brothers Ben, Colum, Dino and Tom. Anne Sands was 15 at that time.
Turnbull noted the similarity in age to her grandmother's debut. She grew up with the group's songs and looks forward to performing them abroad.
