UUP Leader Burrows Meets Secretary of State on Police Ombudsman Vetting Issues
Ulster Unionist Party leader Jon Burrows MLA meets Secretary of State Hilary Benn in London to discuss security vetting and accountability in the Office of the Police Ombudsman.
Burrows raised concerns about oversight of the Police Ombudsman's role, which includes extensive powers and access to top secret documents.
He referred to an incident at the home of former Police Ombudsman Marie Anderson in September 2023 that led to a long-term criminal investigation.
Burrows stated that standard protocols required a review of Anderson's security clearance after the incident.
He said enquiries to the Justice Minister, First Minister, Deputy First Minister, and Secretary of State failed to confirm if any review occurred.
Burrows noted confusion over responsibility, with the Secretary of State treating it as a devolved matter while local ministers denied jurisdiction.
He pointed out no mechanism exists to suspend the Police Ombudsman in any situation.
Burrows called for legislative and procedural changes to address vetting handling and accountability arrangements.
