In February 2023, 10-year-old Daryl McKeever suffered a serious head injury when knocked down on his bike while riding with friends. Paramedics from the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance placed him in a coma at the scene before transporting him to hospital.

Crews from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and Helicopter Emergency Medical Service reached him quickly. Doctors warned the first 24 hours were critical due to multiple injuries including the brain damage.

Medical staff informed Daryl's mother Lyndsey that he might never walk, talk, or feed himself again because of the injury severity. He later developed sepsis after moving from intensive care to a ward.

Daryl has since recovered fully. He relearned to walk and talk, returned to school full-time, and no longer requires a wheelchair.

Daryl and Lyndsey McKeever appeared in a video expressing thanks to the emergency teams. They credited the rapid response with giving Daryl a second chance at life.
