Fermanagh and Omagh District Council decided earlier this year not to accept an invitation for a delegation visit to China in April 2026. Members cited a prior council trip to China in October 2025 as the reason, deeming another visit inappropriate.

The Chinese Consul General in Belfast sent correspondence to Council Chief Executive Alison McCullagh expressing thanks for her efforts in supporting the planned visit over a long period.

The consulate acknowledged the council's decision and stated understanding of the circumstances. It noted the long-standing friendship between Fermanagh and Huangshi in China.

The letter expressed confidence in future cooperation opportunities between the areas. It encouraged McCullagh to maintain interest in the sister-city relationship and promote closer ties.

Council members indicated that future visits would fall to the council after the 2027 local elections.
