Alliance Councillors Depart Ards and North Down Council in Series of Resignations
Hannah Irwin resigned as an Alliance Party councillor for Bangor East and Donaghadee on Ards and North Down Borough Council last Friday. She served as deputy mayor from 2023 to 2024. Irwin stated she felt honoured to serve her constituents and plans to support the party outside elected office.
Rosie Quinn replaced Irwin four days after her resignation. Quinn works in local education within the borough.
Irwin's departure marks the fourth Alliance councillor resignation from the council in less than three years. Karen Douglas resigned in August 2023 after serving as mayor. David Rossiter quit the council and party in October 2024, citing frustration that Alliance had not embraced the possibility of a new Ireland.
Christine Creighton resigned around the same time as Rossiter. She had topped the poll in Holywood during her election the previous year.
Irwin joined the council in 2022 after co-option to replace Connie Egan, who won election to the Northern Ireland Assembly that May. In the following local election, Irwin took second place in her district with 17 percent of the vote.
