Emma Lynch, 35, from Downpatrick, has maintained sobriety for more than two years after treatment at Ward 15, a specialist inpatient addiction unit at Downshire Hospital operated by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

Lynch entered the ward for a three-week stay after referral from a doctor. She completed a detox programme and attended sessions on understanding addiction. Staff assisted her in developing a Sober Living Plan for post-discharge.

Lynch began her sobriety on 4 March 2024. She now attends recovery meetings and participates in groups at the Recovery Shed.

Senior Nursing Assistant Declan Hampton works on Ward 15. He noted that patients often emerge changed after their stay.

Occupational Therapist Anna Milligan supports patients in creating post-ward plans. These plans provide daily structure and help individuals pursue enjoyable activities.

Health Development Specialist Ed Sipler, with over 30 years of experience in alcohol and drugs, leads a multi-disciplinary team on the ward. The team focuses on building self-esteem and coping skills. Sipler asks departing patients what new tools they carry, such as self-respect and control, to sustain sobriety.
