Public Consultation Launched on School Bus Overtaking Safety in Northern Ireland
A public consultation titled Safer Journeys to School: Consultation on Overtaking and Passing Buses has opened in Northern Ireland. The initiative examines rules for drivers overtaking or passing buses, especially when children board or exit.
Fermanagh and South Tyrone DUP MLA Deborah Erskine welcomed the consultation. She serves as the local representative and previously chaired the Infrastructure Committee.
Erskine stated that multiple young people have died on roads while returning from school. She noted families in her constituency have suffered losses from such incidents.
As Infrastructure Committee chair, Erskine requested the Infrastructure Minister review school transport safety alongside the Education Minister. She highlighted risks from drivers overtaking buses as children get on or off.
Erskine said the Infrastructure Minister agreed to the review after discussions with the Education Minister. She urged parents, drivers, schools and the public to participate in the consultation.
Erskine added that public views will help ensure new measures work to protect children across Northern Ireland.
